AP Oddly enough: Mosque beams really belong to Catholic Church
But in all seriousness, I have no idea how this kind of thing becomes "news worthy":
In a world of gathering troubles, is it bad that I find comfort in the fact that the Catholic Church has reclaimed her beams?MADRID, Spain -- Christie's has halted plans to auction a set of 10th-century beams from a famed mosque in the Spanish city of Cordoba, saying Monday it was negotiating a sale to Spanish authorities instead.
The five ornately carved larch wood pieces, estimated to be worth up to $534,000 each, were to have gone on the block in London on Tuesday, but Spanish authorities pressed Christie's to hold the sale until it could be determined if the beams were removed from Spain legally.
...
The mosque was transformed into a cathedral in the 13th century after King Ferdinand III conquered Cordoba.
After word emerged last month that Christie's was going to auction the beams, cathedral officials hired lawyers in London to try to halt the transaction. They welcomed Monday's news from Christie's and said the Roman Catholic Church was the true owner of the beams.
Oh heck, score one for the good guys! Hands off our rightful beams! :-)
