Where the condom controversy currently stands
Today's clarifying comments made by Monsignor Guerrero appear to be the last word for now on the issue.
To recap, here are the unique resources I've been able to make available on this debate:
- Hugh Henry's article first published in Christian Order, "Real Sex or 'Safe Sex': The Impending Catholic Controversy." As I've said before, if you read one article on this debate, read this one.
From the National Catholic Bioethics Quarterly:
- Letter from William May of the John Paul II Institute. The shortest defense of the anti-condom position by the distinguished moral theologian.
- "Condoms and HIV Prevention" by Peter J. Cataldo, Ph.D., Director of Research, NCBC. Medium-length article on the debate.
- In-depth analysis of the question by Luke Gormally. A much longer treatment.
- Debate between Martin Rhonheimer and Benedict Guevin. Rhonheimer provides the most cogent argument for condom use, while Benedict Guevin disagrees with his position.
Other resources/my commentaries:
- Interview with Cardinal Trujillo (President, Pontifical Council for the Family) concerning condom use
- "Family values vs. safe sex" - by Cardinal Trjillo, President, Pontifical Council for the Family
- Complete English translation of Cardinal Martini's comments
- A small reality check as the issue began to get exaggerated
- News sources begin claiming the Vatican is about to change its teaching on this issue
- A related comment from Pope Benedict on the need for Jesuit obedience?
- A perfect example of liberal spin on Cardinal Martini's comments
- Commentary on the media fallout after Cardinal Martini's comments
