Condoleezza Rice at Boston College: Day Two

In follow-up to my first post on this topic, here is a new article from the Boston Globe on the controversy surrounding Condoleezza Rice being invited to speak at Boston College's commencement ceremonies this year (May 22).

Hub Politics does a thorough job of revealing the "hypocrisy" of this sudden protest, given BC's dubious recent degree honorees (John Kerry, Kate Michelman the President of NARAL, Ted Kennedy, and numerous other prominant abortion defenders).

If you ask me, I think it is pretty clear that their claims about "Catholic values" are merely a subset of their primary opposition to the Iraq war. In other words, what they really oppose is Condoleezza Rice's role in the Iraq war, and it just so happens that in this instance their status as a "Catholic University" helps their cause.

The orchestrators of this protest, most notably some members of the theology department, are stretching the Church's statements on the Iraq war in an attempt to support their political views, and yet at the same time continually ignore what the Church has plainly and clearly taught about the sanctity of unborn human life.

Is it a good thing for members of a Catholic institution of higher learning to oppose Condoleezza Rice receiving an honary degree? Perhaps. But only because of her involvement in the Iraq war? Well, probably not.

The texts of the faculty letter and student/alumni letter are available here.
