The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame, America's best-known Catholic university, may ride into town to save Detroit Cardinal Adam Maida's financially troubled John Paul II Cultural Center in Washington, D.C. A University of Notre Dame spokesman confirmed to the Free Press Monday that the South Bend, Ind., university "was asked about the role we might play in the center's future." A spokesman for the John Paul II Cultural Center also confirmed Monday that negotiations were ongoing that could give the nation's premier Catholic institution of higher learning a much bigger profile in the nation's capital.
