The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame, America's best-known Catholic university, may ride into town to save Detroit Cardinal Adam Maida's financially troubled John Paul II Cultural Center in Washington, D.C. A University of Notre Dame spokesman confirmed to the Free Press Monday that the South Bend, Ind., university "was asked about the role we might play in the center's future." A spokesman for the John Paul II Cultural Center also confirmed Monday that negotiations were ongoing that could give the nation's premier Catholic institution of higher learning a much bigger profile in the nation's capital. Figuring out a solution to the JP2 Center quagmire is widely seen as the last major task on Cardinal Maida's list before he is allowed to retire. If Notre Dame takes over the reins it could signal a fast switchup in Detroit.
