Bishops in Baltimore - Day 2: AmP Coverage
The American bishops are meeting in Baltimore this week, and most of the attention is going to be focused on three documents they are discussing: one on natural family planning, another on the reception of communion, and the third on ministry to homosexuals.Amy lets us know that the public sessions are being aired on EWTN here (schedule here). Tuesday afternoon, 2-5pm EST is the next broadcast.
Day 2 coverage:
- Whispers: "More from the Floor": "...word's gone around that the meeting -- slated to end on Thursday afternoon -- could wrap up Wednesday night. The bishops are scheduled to be in executive session on Wednesday, followed by a Holy Hour and an opportunity for confessions."
- Associated Press: "Roman Catholic bishops approve new guidelines on gays": "Gay Catholic activists immediately judged the document a failure that will push gay and lesbians away from the church." "Sam Sinnett, president of DignityUSA, an advocacy group for gay Catholics, said the new guidelines reflect the bishops' ignorance about sexuality. He said the document would alienate gays."
- Amy Welborn: "On Homosexual Inclination" (summary of proceedings from the floor, follow-up with "the Presser") and "Talking About Music" (Trautman nixes Vigneron's proposal)
- Doms' commentary: "Worthless statement on Iraq" & "Summary of Day One of US bishops meeting": "As usual, with a very few notable exceptions, the media sent reporters who (a) didn’t seem familiar with Catholic issues and (b) were looking for soundbites to fit their pre-written stories."
- Update: Reuters is a bit better: "Catholic bishops tell gays to remain celibate" (though it still ends with a quote from Sam Sinnett, who seems to be the go-to person on this issue).
- UPDATE 2: the three documents are now available (PDF files).
